Services Offered

Ward Services

Children are admitted to the ward from birth to their 17th birthday for both urgent and routine conditions. Surgical day case operations and medical investigations are catered for. There is a school within the hospital ward and play therapy services available. It is a small local unit with good community links and access to regional intensive care services when required.

Outline of the Department

Based on the second floor of the hospital, our services are interlinked with SCBU and Children's Outpatients, enabling Paediatric doctors to be accessible at all times. The ward comprises of single side rooms, 2 & 4 bedded bays; these are allocated on a per medical need requirement whilst also enabling older children to be nursed separately as boys/girls (except in day case).

The paediatric consultants carry out 2 ward rounds per day, ensuring that children are regularly reviewed and allowing for shorter lengths of stay, the on-call surgical and orthopaedic teams visit as necessary.

Infection control

Infection control is high on our agenda and hand gel and soaps are visible by all patient areas for use by staff and visitors alike, these are wall mounted to reduce the risk of children playing with them.

Saturday pre-operative assessment clinic

We also offer a Saturday clinic to help familiarise young patients with the hospital before the day of their operation. The  Saturday clinic has been set up to provide young patients, parents, and carers with the opportunity to have a look around the Children’s Ward and go through what will happen on the day of the child’s operation. When children arrive at the Saturday clinic they receive a presentation from the nurses and play specialist about going to theatre for surgery. This is followed by a tour of the ward and a practical session, so that the children become familiar with oxygen masks and the machines used for taking observations that they will see on the day. During this time parents have the opportunity to talk with a nurse about their child’s admission.
