The Coronary Care Unit (CCU) and Lugg Ward

The Coronary Care Unit (CCU) and Lugg Ward at Hereford County Hospital are the designated places for people who are admitted with heart problems.   The Coronary Care Unit, (signposted ‘Cardiac Care Unit’), is situated on the first floor at Hereford County Hospital.  It is a six-bedded unit and cares for patients who:

•      have had heart attacks (known as myocardial infarction, often abbreviated to MI)

•      require monitoring and assessment of chest pain

•      with severe arrhythmias (irregular, slow or fast heart beats) that require treatment such as emergency pacemaker or specific medication.

Our catchment area includes Herefordshire and Powys. The specialist nature of our unit means we are a mixed sex ward, but our philosophy is to maintain the dignity and well-being of our patients and respect their individuality. 

Lugg Ward is a 30 bedded in-patient ward, with 20 cardiology beds and they have five four bedded bays and 10 single side wards.   Patients are admitted to the ward from CCU, Clinical Assessment Unit (CAU) and Acute Medical Unit (AMU).  They look after patients with all types of cardiac problems. Patients on Lugg Ward are looked after by a team of nurses, health care assistants and assistant practitioners.  The consultants that look after the cardiology patients are on the ward daily.  

Both wards are supported by the cardiac rehab team and heart failure team. Other specialised services are also easily contactable when required.
